MAGNUS HOEL
Visiting Fellow

Magnus Hoel is a PhD candidate at the University of Oslo and Visiting Fellow at the UCL Digital Speech Lab in the spring of 2025. His dissertation is on the political theory on free speech and hate speech and has a special interest in the intersection between hate speech and religion. He has taught in topics such as free speech, hate speech, toleration, distributive justice, and methodology of normative political theory at BA and MA level at the University of Oslo. Before starting his PhD, he worked for the Norwegian Commission of Freedom of Expression, a government-appointed commission with the mandate of reviewing the status for freedom of expression in Norway and suggesting legal and non-legal measures strengthening the freedom of expression in the Norwegian society. Hoel has an MA in political science from the University of Oslo. In his master’s thesis he examined the normative status of religiously motivated hate speech.
