Dr Beatriz Kira is Lecturer in Law at the University of Sussex and Faculty Fellow with the Digital Speech Lab at UCL. Previously she was a postdoctoral Research Fellow in Law & Regulation at the Lab. Her academic work focuses on the governance of digital technologies, and the regulatory and policy frameworks to supervise the economic power of technology companies, including competition law, trade law, and data protection regulation. She is currently writing on the legal regulation and civil society oversight of social media platforms, with a focus on their content moderation systems. She has published in various interdisciplinary and legal journals, including Industrial and Corporate Change, Global Policy, Nature Human Behaviour, and The Theory and Practice of Legislation.
Before joining UCL, Dr Kira was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Oxford University’s Blavatnik School of Government, where she taught law and public policy on the MPP programme. A lawyer and social scientist by training, she holds a PhD in Economic Law and Political Economy from the University of Sao Paulo, and an MSc in Social Sciences of the Internet from Oxford University. She has served as an expert consultant for the Brazilian competition authority (CADE) and as a researcher for the Brazilian Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA).
